Projects: Energy Efficient Protocol Design for Sensor Networks with Complex Topology

Complex network topologies such as network cuts and holes, defined as the regions with no deployed/functioning sensor nodes, occur frequently in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) due to limited energy available to sensor nodes, environmental obstacles, and security/physical attacks. However, many WSN protocols are developed based on an assumption of non-complex network topology, such as uniformly distributed nodes in an area of interest. In this research, we investigate how complex network topologies degrade the energy efficiency of existing WSN protocols. We then propose energy efficient protocols for detecting complex network topologies (i.e., our efficient cut and hole detection/abstraction algorithms). Lastly, building on our aforementioned algorithms for the detection of complex network topologies, we design novel protocols with explicit focus on improving the energy efficiency and robustness of state-of-art solutions.
